My story

Sarah carrying her horse tack down at the stables

Hi, I’m Sarah. Want to know what motivated me to start my own animal-based business? And discover why my past, present and future make me the perfect choice for helping you take care of your cats, dogs and horses? Excellent! You’re in the right place – keep reading to find out more…

Adoring animals since the ‘80s

I’ve been animal-mad for as long as I can remember. As a kid, I loved nothing more than a trip to the farm or a local walk to feed the donkeys in the field at the end of the lane. We had pets, but I was constantly trying to adopt the friendly animals we encountered out and about.

I heart horses & ponies (if you know, you know)

My horse obsession started when I was a toddler – I’d make my parents walk to feed the horse who lived in the field at the end of our road. I started proper lessons aged seven and got my first horse when I was 11.

Being into horses, having the responsibility and the routine – and developing lifelong friendships with fellow horse fanatics down at the stables – gave me the stability I needed to navigate my teenage years.

There’s a reason equine therapy is a thing – and I genuinely believe that being around horses during that period of raging hormones and difficult emotions helped to improve my confidence and self-esteem during a tough few years. And now I get to share my horse obsession with my own kids, which is honestly just lovely.

I quit! – Midlife crisis or moment of clarity?

I graduated in 2005 with a degree in Psychology & Sociology and started working at Cheshire Police HQ shortly after. I completed a foundation degree in policing and I spent 17 years there, passing my law exam and achieving a promotion to sergeant in 2023.

But policing is tough and can be pretty gruelling mentally and sometimes physically with shift work - impacting on family life and kids with little time for anything else.

Moment of clarity

So, thanks to a moment of clarity, I handed in my notice and here I am now – focusing on you. Making sure I provide the highest quality of care for your pets to create a brighter future for me and my family.

  • My pet care qualifications come from some of the most highly-regarded providers in the business.

  • My background in policing gives you peace of mind that your pets and your home are in safe hands.

  • I’m never happier than when I’m out and about, spending time with animals and getting close to nature, so you can count on me to be there, rain or shine.

  • I’m perfectly positioned to help you.

I can’t wait to see where this next chapter takes me. Thanks so much for joining me.

Whiskers, Paws & Hooves: A new chapter

Who knows where Whiskers, Paws & Hooves will take me. Am I excited? YES! Am I terrified? Definitely. Do I have any regrets? Absolutely not.

It’s taken me a long time to realise I prefer animals to humans – to realise I’m more suited to an outdoor career than to one spent missing milestones and all the other precious moments with my loved ones that are so fleeting in the grand scheme of things.

I love having a new challenge to get stuck into and I can guarantee I’ll be taking care of your pets as if they were my own, because success is the only option for me – and that means you need to be happy.
